Virginia passed universal background checks a few years ago (sucks I know) but exempted gifts.

My mother is gifting me a gun, but we want to make sure obviously we aren’t fricking anything up. It is 100% a bona fide gift and I’m giving her nothing of value in exchange. As far is the law is concerned I believe that means we’re ok.

But if something were to happen, just to protect my mother, should we write up a bill of sale and have it notarized? I think it would make her feel more comfortable to have something hard to prove she transferred it to my possession.

if she/you need this, just go to your local FFL, and have it transferred.

You can go into Bass Pro, purchase a Glock and walk right into the parking lot and give it away without any paperwork.

If said gun is used in a crime you may be in hot water if you cant prove you gifted it.

My advice is get an FFL to transfer it or at least do a generic bill of sale showing it as a gift.

Just type up something with the model & serial numbers saying your Mom gave it to you. IF you want to go the extra mile, sign it and have it notarized.

Why don’t you say the gun was gifted well before laws were put in place.
There’s no record of this gun, correct?

Are both you and your mother located in Virginia?
