Garmin GPS troubleshoot and possible new purchase

I have a Garmin GPSMap 440. The power will come on and the unit will beep but the screen will come on intermittently. Mostly the screen stays off. It is not a backlight issue nor a power issue. Garmin's website blows like your mom.
Anyone have experience with returning a unit to Garmin?
If you've had a Garmin and a Lowrance, tell me the differences and which I should purchase if I but a new unit. 20 foot boat I use in the bay. I have a separate depth finder.
