I don't know about humans, but I have been told that in dogs, the antivenin doesn't do much. I don't know if that's true, it's what I've heard.

Venomous snake bites can vary so much. Even within the same species the bite and a person's reaction to it can vary greatly. I've heard stories of people who require 20+ vials of antivenom just to stabilize while another never even left the river where his fishing trip was and only experienced minor swelling and itching. Both of those were from the same species of rattlesnake.

Then, there is the occasional person who has an actual allergy to the venom that a bite could kill them in minutes due to anaphylaxis. You can't really even account for that, and even a person who has been bitten before can develop an unknown allergy.

So, blanket statements in regards to venomous snakebites don't really work.

Buddy of mine got tagged by a cotton mouth right below the elbow. Was 10 beers in or so and said screw it.

Had hardly any swelling. Was fine. Went to the doc the next day and got a scolding and some antibiotics.

6 months later they had to amputate his arm. Flesh started rotting away from the bite outward.

I kill all of them that aren't a king snake. Rattlers being our most prolific.
