My son bought a Jon Boat. He and I put in an aluminum floor from aluminum sheet metal. He eventually wants to put some EVA foam (Sea-Deck) in it. He wants to wait till he has it laid out like he wants before he puts the floor down. What can we put on the raw aluminum till then that the EVA foam will stick to later. I thought about using bed liner paint. You guys have any recommendations?

Bedliner will have too much texture for the foam flooring to stick to.
I would sand the aluminum with 180 grit and put down an automotive epoxy primer down.
Use a true epoxy primer since it etches into the aluminum. Most other primers won't adhere to the aluminum well.

That was my thought as well on using the bed liner paint.

How heavy is that stuff?

The 4×8 sheet of Aluminum we used was 57 pounds. Don't wanna add to much weight to it

About 4 pounds, I'd cut the mat to fix in place and put it down with large washers and screws in the corners.

That's a good idea. May do that instead of gluing it down.

He bought a boat in October and sold it already and bought another. I doubt he keeps this one much longer.

Around here we call it a "bateau."

Can you use inexpensive indoor/outdoor carpet until you want something more permanent?

I highly suggest going with Safefloor over EVA. It’s not as soft as EVA but it will come with a warranty for as long as you own the boat. It’s cheaper, easier to maintain, and won’t have to be replaced after 5-7 years.

I believe OP is from Bayou Lafourche. Where do you hail from?

Don’t put anything at all on it. Sand it with a DA sander fine grit and wipe with acetone right before you stick on the foam.

Aluminum oxidation is self-protecting so once it dulls, it will prevent further corrosion…unless it gets a shitty paint job.

I lived in Houma/Lafourche all my life and never heard it called a bateau till I was a Jr. in High school at a DECA convention.
