EHD in deer

Was out taking some pictures this morning around a pond and this deer came walking by and at first I thought it had something in its mouth. After looking a little closer its tongue was swollen so it was holding its mouth open the whole time. Pretty sure this is Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease blue tongue. This was in Madison County AL.

Possibly.
I would think the majority of deer that far south had built up a pretty good resistance to EHD by now. But, I’m not a biologist and could be way off base.

I’m in no way an expert but I always thought EHD was more common in the late summer and fall months. I read up on both EHD and blue tongue. Both are common in August-November

Deer pant when they’re nervous or feel stressed.

EHD comes from midges that hatch in hot, dry conditions. The pictured deer isn’t suffering from EHD.

I hope that is not what it is. Watched her for about 3 minutes and she never closed her mouth one time. Never seen that before. She walked up and never seemed to get in a hurry so nothing was chasing her. She was a long ways away and the first thing I noticed was her mouth looked funny. Never in my 50 some odd years have I seen a deer walk around with its mouth open without shutting it. I never saw it from the other side but could have possibly had a swollen jaw or abscess tooth. Definitely strange.
