Dog diagnosed with kidney disease - diet help

Recently, my SO’s 7 year old dog was diagnosed with kidney disease. The vet gave us a prescription to give him once a day and put him on prescription food. Didn’t give us much of an answer for his future besides, “It could be 6 months or 6 years” (FWIW due to an early life accident, his kidneys have always been weak )
The pills are Benzaepril (10mg/day) and the food is Hill’s Kidney Care
A couple of things going on, and he started this regime in June:
He is constantly whining for food. We were doing a cup and a half twice a day, then recently have added an extra half cup total. From the moment he wakes up, all day until he falls asleep he wants food. He has never been a beggar. The poor boy is probably starving. In the last couple of days, we are adding a small portion later in the evening to hold him through the night. Is it because the food has less protein than he’s used to? He ate Hill’s Sensitive Stomach before switching to Kidney Care
We used to give him raw hide bones, but he can’t have them anymore due to the amount of sodium. We have been letting him have a handful of green beans or so as a treat to try to tie him over... the vet suggested this. It is not helping. Does anyone have any suggestion on what we can be doing differently to prevent the constant whining? It’s not the whining that bothers me so much as knowing he is constantly hungry
Another issue we have had are spots on his belly. At first we thought it might be ringworm, because he had it about 3 years ago, but it’s not ringworm. They are almost like sores. They slowed down for a short period of time after we started the medication but they are still showing up. I typically make a coconut oil/tea tree oil combo and apply it, and they end up drying up and healing. Unfortunately we have yet to figure out the issue
I’m just stumped on where they are coming from. The Vet told us “biting flies” but I just don’t find that to be remotely close to the issue.
Mainly looking for suggestions from people who have had experience with this. Treat suggestions to hold him through the day (can’t be high in protein...), suggestions as to what the rash/marks on his skin are also welcome
Thanks in advance

Weird that you posted this to two boards on the same site...

Not weird and it happens.
OT / Outdoor posters don’t necessarily post on both boards. I don’t really post on either except a few times when I have specific questions
I figured there was valuable info I could get from both sets of people. I will do whatever it takes to find out how to make my dog comfortable.

I wouldn’t feed Hills sceience diet. I’d look into feeding a raw species appropriate diet and you’ll see a world of a difference.

It'll be a good day when this fad is over

Thanks - and may i ask why not Hills?
We have thought about cooking all his food, or doing raw - whatever is appropriate upon more research

Have you considered dialysis? I know it’s expensive, and a long process , 3 days a week, but we’re talking a dogs life..

You sir, could not be more wrong.
I have a German Shepherd that is twelve years old and looks and acts like he's two. His teeth are white as snow. Puts the fear of God into every person that enters my yard. All he has every put in his mouth is raw chicken, raw beef, liver, kidney, fish, etc. Raw flesh is the only appropriate thing to feed a dog. Period. End of story. God made them that way.
He's my second raw-fed GSD. The other died at fifteen when he was hit by a truck.
The Vet business is owned and subsidized by the dog food industry. That is a fact and you know it.

Look at the ingredients on Hills. The first thing you’re gonna see is “corn”. Then the protein itself is a “byproduct” or “meal”.
Go watch the documentary “pet fooled” on Netflix and you will understand how big of a racket the pet food industry is, led by Hills, Iams, and Purina.

Thanks for the anecdotal reports and extensive study of n=2 dogs.
Owned and subsidized? Here's a nice little fact for you: I make $0.00 from prescription diets. Practice owners make very little from them. For general feeding (i.e. when there is no Rx diet indicated) I typically recommend diets that can be found at most pet food stores - Solid gold, Wellness, others. How does that benefit me at all?

Which fad are you talking about?
The 50 year old fad of feeding a processed food and grains to a carnivore?
Or the thousand year old “fad” of feeding a species appropriate diet?

Species appropriate - Canis lupus familiaris - The common dog. Go ahead and educate me and everyone else on why a guy comes in with a diagnosis of kidney disease and raw diet will cure it all. I'd also like to know what specifically makes it "species appropriate."

Species appropriate would be 70% raw meat, 10% bone, 5% liver, 5% other secreting organ.
Go ahead and tell me why a carnivore needs grains in his diet.

I can see we're done here. I'm sure facebook will be a better platform for you
Sorry, you made the claim that he should switch to a raw diet. The onus is on you

There's the truth.
Aubievet is going to try to defend the position that bag food of any kind is better than what God designed. No offense, Aubie, but you are absolutely wrong. You know it, too.
And if the truth were known, bag dog food put you through vet school. It put my niece through it.

I edited my post to show the appropriate guidelines. And I see you’re already backing down, probably bc you’ve just proved my point in that vets know nothing about nutrition except from what their sponsors tell them.

I see the late night crazy is out tonight. But, I'm up for the challenge...
Bag dog food put me through vet school? Why does the government still ask me for payments on this phantom $150,000 loan then? Is it that damn Nigerian prince again?

There is no documentation of a canine in the wild eating grain unless it were sick or starving.
Once again, God made dogs that way.
