Fuel filter is not very old. I typically only buy fuel at one place so I don't think it is that either.

here's a reply from a very knowledgeable friend...

quote:

If it says reduced engine power then there should be a code. EDGE's are notorious for not reading out but select codes, so it would be best to read them with EFILIVE or a TECH2. Also tell him to look and see if it has a plastic fuel filter on it. They are KNOWN to be a POS and leak air in out of nowhere. ONLY use RACOR/AC DELCO fuel filters.

Shouldn't be an issue if you let your shite cool down before you kill it, but it seems like this could cause some major issues if you killed it with a hot turbo with oil cooking.

I'm not trying to correct you. I'm just inquiring. I don't know a whole lot about what trade-offs to make with high performance diesels.

Thanks for the info. In my current physical state, fiddling around with the tuner was about as far as my mechanic skills can go right now. At this point, I'm just gonna get it to TNT and hope it is nothing major.

With just getting out of the hospital an having this feeding tube in my nose, I just can't do much.

When I bought the truck new, I installed an EGT gauge and boost gauge on it...I always wait for the EGT's to get down to 400* minimum before shutting the truck off...this should be common practice with any diesel IMO...that or get a turbo timer installed...

ETA and I always have used Mobil Delvac 1 full synthetic oil...this goes a long way to prevent oil coking(1 less o ;-) )

well I would hope you or a friend would be able to look and see if your filter is the plastic housing or not...

Practice this religiously with tractors, which is about the extent that I frick with turbo diesels. They don't have EGT gauges but I guess letting it idle while you head back to the barn, load your truck up, etc is enough.

I could see your average dumbass caking up oil tubes pretty easily with how hot those new turbos get with all that boost and high EGTs. Why they don't come with EGT timers from the factory I'll never understand. I guess it's because people don't want to burn an extra teaspoon of diesel.

Out of curiosity, what do the EGT's on a truck like yours run at just driving around regular? 900 or so?

cruising the interstate at 77 with my 8500# cargo trailer I run about 900* pre turbo...

just cruising empty interstate around 650*

of course both scenarios vary with hills/bridges

drag racing is another story...1600-1800* sustained for 10-12 seconds...

a good exhaust and large down pipe brings egt's down a couple hundred easy...add a larger turbo and larger better flowing up pipes and I probably run lower EGT's than most stock trucks on the road...

another friends opinion

quote:

The LMM will limp if the air filter is missing. The Banks filter may have caught up with him. Check it's condition. Clean the MAF esp as the oiled air filter can oil foul the MAF. X2 on Wix plastic fuel filters being junk. Water pumps are involved repairs as this one is gear driven. Check wiring and sensors in the area. Check the driver's side boost tube for contacting a nearby wiring harness and melting/rubbing through. You have to clear the code to get out of limp.

I've got a mini max chip in my f250. It increased highway mpg by about 4.

I clean my Banks filter pretty regularly, but it is almost 5 years old. There is also a "shuddering" type sound from the muffler area towards the front when I try to accelerate.

May be a dumb question, but I'm not on my A game right now. Can I put a factory air filter in that Banks Ram Air box?

I could order a new banks filter if that turns out to be the problem, I was just thinking slap a cheap factory one in there to check that for now.

ETA: from the looks of pics I googled, the answer is no.

I would check your intake tube for an oily residu in case you are over oiling your banks filter...if there is residue, you can bet it has coated the MAF as well... They sell a cleaner just for it, but alchohol and a q-tip works as well...make sure you are running a good fuel filter and it wouldn't hurt to double dose some power service (grey) in your fuel....

The shudder could be a couple of things...I don't know what power levels you have run or your driving style...but anything over a 90 rwhp tune driven crazy without letting the Allison relearn is asking for trouble...hopefully it isn't your tranny limping...did you ever read the codes out of it? If your edge doesn't show it, a tech 2 or even AutoZone should be able to pull the code for you...

Could also be a u joint ... I'm not sure about the newer trucks...but if you don't have the big aluminum 1 piece drive shaft then it could be that...gm used a 2 piece with a carrier bearing at first that caused a launch shudder, but IIRC that was corrected,

I don't drive the truck hard. I get in it every now and again, but that is rare.

When I first limped home with it fr the shop, it did flash the transmission signal on the dash once but it went away. I've cranked it several times since them trying to get it to show again. I can't even get it to show the engine underpowered message again.

I cranked I again today and it smelled more diesel fumes under the hood than usual and as I've already mentioned, it has a funny drone coming from the pipe up there. I'm at a loss.

does the gear shift indicator(PRND) flash or do weird things?

I'm reaching here, but it could be the NSBU (Neutral Safety Backup Switch)

ETA: I also forwarded your last two posts...

Not that I've noticed.

Wasn't sure what you meant by flashed trans signal...the gear indicator will flash if the NSBU switch is bad...thought that might be what you were referring to...

so we can eliminate the NSBU for now...

Where was the transmission signal you saw? the dash/DIC? the CTS monitor?

It was on the dash where the other signals light up like low tire indicator, etc. it didn't scroll any message across the screen or anything.

And I checked the Edge CTS again today and it doesn't show any trouble codes.

as noted by my friend...the Edge is notorious for not reading out all codes...

if you know anyone with EFI live or a Tech II...that would be golden...

Auto Zone may be able to read the codes stored as well...

I'm probably done messing with it. It is bound for TNT via toe truck Monday morning. I really appreciate your help though.

I don't have any friends with programmers, or any with diesels for that matter. Limping it all the way to autozone would be too much hassle, especially in my current physical state.

I'm just hoping it's nothing major at this point.

I wish you lived closer...I have EFI live...I'd be glad to hook it up and pull any codes...if you live on campus or close by, I will be in BR for the UNO game Tuesday...

Thanks but I live a good ways from campus out in Dutchtown.

I'm getting it towed on Monday because that's the only really free day that I have next week due to doctor appts and teeth extractions and recovery from said extractions.

Thanks again.
