I'm looking for some info regarding a possible family trip to the Chandeleurs and staying at one of the lodges. Are the places family friendly (I have 3 kids - 8th grade, 6th, 3rd; 2 of 'em are girls). Best time of the year to go? Did you take one of the sea-planes out there? Are there other things to do - beach?, etc.. - Any help is appreciated!

Never knew that was a thing. Looks interesting for a family outing for a few nights.

very doable. I have stayed on there when there was families aboard. Erin H. is contactible on Facebook and they will make sure y'all are squared away.

Late March - May and October-November are my favorite fishing periods. Summer is good as well and can be really productive but I wouldn't wade fish in July or August due to sharks.

I’ve stayed at the islander twice. You pretty much need your own boat if you are gonna go this route. The islander is not a 5 star resort. It is however a nice remote fishing lodge. Food is great, all you can drink, cabins are tight quarters. Kids will be fine, wife maybe or maybe not. It’s a destination where you(I) are wanting to maximize your fishing time. We leave Pass Christian at first light. Drop off gear at islander(about 40+ mile run). Go fishing till noonish. Eat lunch and head back out to fish afternoon. Come back drink beer, eat, shower, go to bed. Up early for breakfast, fish till noonish, back out in the afternoon, etc..... wake up the next morning, fish till 11 then back to the launch and home. April to September are the most likely times to go. When staying out at the islands you need decent weather to get out there and to get back. Remember we are talking 30 miles of open water that must be traversed.

The fishing can be great at times and really tough as well. Usually a mix of wading and fishing out of the boat. You can definitely hang out on the “beach” if that’s your thing but it’s mostly about fishing. They do have a bunch of seashells that your kids will probably enjoy picking up. I have a 13 year old that likes to fish on occasion but I wouldn’t even attempt to bring him on a multi day trip. In fact some of the older supposedly hardcore fishermen I have taken with me have wilted in these trips. We have been making day trips to the islands as well throughout the summer but it is one long day seeing as I drive from Thibodaux there and back.

I think it’s possible to arrange a guide to take you while staying on the islander but he is gonna have to make the run from Pass Christian daily. Another option is to stay on one of the live aboards out of Biloxi. Theses large boats carry small dingys that you pilot around the islands to fish.

Sorry for the poor quality pic but this is from a couple weeks ago at chandeleur. Picture is at my neighbors camp in the Rigolets. About 60 miles one way from his camp.

October-November
Seems like high risk time to go because of increasing likelihood that a cold front will make the 30 mile trek across open water either miserable or completely undoable....unless you can book it pretty last minute when you can see what the forecast holds for the next few days until the return trip

probably. I usually run out and back from BSL so not having to plan and put a deposit down at a lodge. Some of my best days have been in October though.

Another option is the Cat Island Experience.
