As a beginner, you might want to start out with some of these? Works great for experienced anglers, too.

are you gonna talk, or are you gonna fish?

You will end up fishing the closest water to you regardless of how often you tell yourself you'll fish further away. People tend to buy gear that is consistent with water they want to fish, which isn't always the same as what they actually often fish.

What kind of water and species are closest to your house?

I learned to battle adversity more in the kayak. The energy to go out in the first place makes you work a little harder for bites on a bad day. Also reminds you that fish can be had near the launch.

A 202, a box of worms, a stringer, a sammich and a 12 pack.

Take a trip to the Sportsman Show in Gonzales next month. There's a whole pavilion of fishing gear. Talk to the guys working the booths, especially manufacturer reps. They can help set you up with the right kind of gear depending on where and what you'll be fishing for.

And the show will have a separate pavilion full of boats. Even if you're not planning to buy a brand new boat, the variety of boats that'll be there should help you get a better of idea of what you want.
