22 long rifle and an elevated stand.

When I was a kid I shot my first deer (1951) on a ranch and the rancher helped us dress it out. I was dissapointed in the rack so he told me to go out behind the machine shed and pick out whatever I wanted. There was a whole pile of deer skulls there and they all had .22 bullet holes in them. Seems that the deer really raised heck with their third cutting hay stacks and after they climbed around on and fouled them with urine and droppings the cattle wouldn't eat the hay. The solution was to sit in the stack on a moonlit night and proceed to harvest them for the freezer. Neighbors had been eating venison all winter that way for years.
