This is going to be a long post with me probably giving too many details so if you can be helpful I'd appreciate it and if you can't join the party.

So the guy that owned the dame's grandparents of my lab Leroy is wanting back into the bloodline. His Sire (ckc) died in 2016 at the age of 15. His Dame (akc) died in 2017 at age 7. He sold a puppy (ckc) to my buddy in 2015. My buddy's dog had a litter in January of 2017 that my dog Leroy came from. My buddy's dog has since been fixed. The sire for the litter that my dog came from is akc along with both his parents being akc as well.

Leroy (pictured above) is approx. 120 pounds right now. I have just sent off paperwork to get him ckc certified. He is a fantastic dog and has primarily been a house dog/ running partner with limited amounts of dove retrieval experience. Hips and elbows have been good on the dame's parents as well as the sire and the sire's parents.

So my questions are as follows:
1. Should I be breeding my dog right now?
2. If I breed him now what could I expect to change in regards to my dog?
3. What should I be looking for to safeguard my dog?
4. Can you walk me through a general process for studding out my dog?
5. The dame was bought for $500, what would my compensation for the use of my dog.
6. Am I overthinking this?

Thanks for any and all help, here are some more pictures of Leroy.

Stud fee is typically the value of the first sold pup

What ever you agree to wih owner of dam agree in writing

I have always taken my POL and sold it to (or the rights to it to someone I felt deserved a dog at a fair price) I actually have sold pups from my dogs to the "right" people less than their litter mates who were picked after

If you are serious get your dog ofa. I personally would not be interested in a sire that was 120 lbs and not ofa. Don't get mad that's just my opine....in my world lab males are 60-85 lbs.

Protecting your dog get bitch brucellosis tested or do AI

Your dog won't change from getting laid.

First and foremost you should have your OFA certs done if you want to be a reputable stud dog. This should be done after your dog has reached two years of age. Secondly, you should have a brucellosis test done on sire and dame before each breeding. Brucellosis can be deadly, so treat it seriously. Also, not a must, but I would make sure your dog is AKC and or UKC.
I think it seemed if your dog wasn't quite a year old and already 120lbs? That's a big big lab. I'll say he doesn't look that big in the pictures, but even if he is 90lbs. thats still a monster, lol.
Not knowing much about the pedigree, I would think that $500 would be tops on the stud fee, likely less.

My dog is only 11 months old right now so I can't get him ofa certified. I agree that my dog is massive for a lab and that does worry me. He is very active so I'm not worried about him being overweight right now. He has a vet appointment after the first so I may change his routine based upon that check up.

With the guy wanting to get back into the bloodline I have a feeling he will want PoL so I'm not sure if that should change price or not.

I have not heard of brucellosis, so I will look into that.

Thanks for the help.

Where do you live?

If you get all the health certs done I would possibly be interested in getting a pup off of him. Do you know if he is from hunting stock?

Brucellosis testing is really quick and easy. It's a $50-$75 blood test that can be done in house depending on the vet.

I'm in bham.

Dames line has a good bit of hunting certs and the sires probably does if you go back a few generations. My dog's sire has no certs but I have hunted with him and he is a stout duck dog.

Good advice above. Should wait til 2 yo and get the certs done.

DM me on GM if there's any health specific stuff you want to know. Kinda surprised you didn't already

I just got propositioned today and my gut reaction was to straight out refuse.

I didn't get him to breed. He is a companion/limited hunting.

If this matriculates into happening I'll definitely be hitting you up.
