^also curious. In the market for a beginner bow. Thinking Bowie would be my best bet but not sure

My best advice is to ignore all of the fanboys that recommend the brand that they shoot. Go to different shops and shoot every brand that you can get your hands on. Don’t overlook smaller companies like Obsession, Xpedition, and Elite. You will know when you find the right bow for you.

All the well name brands will work

Bear
Matthews
Pse
Bowtech
Hoyt
Diamond

I have pse, but all are good. Get one in your price range, that you like... and it will kill deer. People these days make bow selection too difficult. Indians killed deer with sticks and string, these new bows are throwing arrows at 300-400fps with razor blades on the end lol. It doesnt matter brand. I paid $200 for a pse brute x, put a whisker biscuit and a sight on it. And guess what, killed deer just the same as the guy with a $1500 matthews.

1: Have someone find your draw length
2: Figure out how much poundage you can/want to pull

The rest is just personal preference and budget.

The guys at Bowie are great, worth paying a bit more for the expertise and help getting you on the right track.

Call Chags in Metairie. They have folks that trade in every year for the latest and greatest and they usually have a very good used inventory. I got a year old Mathews top of the line a few years ago and saved a good bit on something that was still a Cadillac. They know what they’re doing tuning it out also.

Also like others have said, ignore the brands and get what feels comfortable to you. They all kill when you’re comfortable with your gear.

I just got a Bear Cruzer G-2. My first bow so I wanted something that was more adjustable than some. I have been shooting a week now. I was able to back it down until I got comfortable with it and have slowly started to crank it back up.

Both my boys have Diamond Infinite Edge Pros and those are good bows too.

I got the boys bows at Cabela's and mine at Bowie. Happy with service by both.

I am a lefty so it took about 5 weeks for it to come in at Bowie since they don't stock many lefties in a lower price range. So if you are a lefty keep that in mind.

I am using mine for target shooting with my kids since they are doing 4-H Archery.

Good luck with finding a bow.

I found a used Z7 from someone in Washington state for $600 shipped with a 7 deadly pins sight, break away rest, and Mathews quiver.

Got one off eBay for $425 shipped from a bowshop in MN. Had to buy a sight but really impressed with this bow. Much better than my 1998 MQ1.

To OP, check with local bowshop and see if you can buy used bow, then try out what they have. i like Mathews but there are lots of good bows out there.

Where did you guys get cams for the Z7 to fit your draw length? Is it just a matter of finding a deal on one that fits you? I can't find the cams for sale anywhere and I read matthews quit making them.

Bear in mind those premiere flagship bows are generally designed for experienced shooters. You wouldn't buy your 16yo beginning driver a Porsche. Look for something with an advertised IBO speed of 310-325. That's a happy medium, anything faster and you give up some forgiveness if your form isn't perfectly consistent and anything slower and you'll probably be unhappy with its performance. Stick with reputable manufactures as others have already listed. I shoot Hoyt but you should look at Elite Bows also Stay around a 7" brace height. Look for a bow that has a solid stop at full draw so you can have a consistent draw length on every shot. Spillway Sportsman and Bowie's have fairly experienced personal in their archery departments and between the two you should be able to sample most brands.

I am also in the market for a first bow. Any thoughts on necessary accessories? I know I'll need a sight, wrist release and arrow rest. Anything else the OB would recommend?
