Big Bend in August

What can you guys tell me? I am going to start doing my own research here shortly but I may have some availability to make a trip in August. I’d like to do some hiking, light off-roading, maybe backcountry backpacking (overnight). Probably 3-4 days in park. Must do’s?

Sleep all day / head out at night like the nomads in the Sahara do

Can’t imagine how miserably hot that place would be in August. Rafting erryday would be the only thing I would participate in at that time. Will need a passport to cross river.

Northern New Mexico or Colorado in August

I wouldn't recommend it in August. It's incredibly hot.

I went last August . We stayed in the park at the chisos basin lodge, where it was much cooler than the lower elevations. The downside is, everywhere else you go it will brutally hot. Like 107 at Santa Elena Canyon when we hiked one afternoon, thankfully it’s shady most of the way.
We also went canoeing on the rio grande, the water was very low, but still a nice paddle.
The early spring is much better temp wise and for wild flowers, but Big Bend is a special place, go when you can.
You will get more response on the travel board.

Inside the park, Mariscal Mines is a must do. Old Ore and Black Gap roads if you have a legit 4x4 vehicle. Recommend doing Black Gap south to north.
Outside the park have to try Christmas mountain 4x4 trail at Terlingua Ranch.

Uh that would not be fun at all. Spend your days in New Mexico or Colorado where it would be far, far more comfortable and enjoyable to hike. August in Big Bend is downright dangerous.

As others have said hot. The Chisos Lodge is closed through September. Check out this link for park status.

Hit up Santa Elena Canyon. you can hike in the shadows a lot of the day after noon time.
Stay in the mountains and you’ll be above 5,000 elevation most of the time and it won’t be as bad as some people make it sound. Head down out if the mountains and it will be just as bad as people make it sound.
I’m going back first week of October!
