Will fish a few ponds in Wet Fel this spring, but haven’t pond fished in 30 years. What is a good rod/reel combo for bass fishing in 2acre ponds? Go-to artificial bait? Am familiar with set up for in-shore, near-shore fishing on grand isle, but suspect that type of setup is bigger than needed.

Much obliged,

What kind of a budget are you looking at? Also spinning rod or baitcaster?

Any of the Lews Mach combos are good if your set on getting a combo and don’t want to spend too much.

My spinning reel (2500) doubles as a freshwater set up from time to time. I use it for mostly inshore specks/reds but is a perfect size for bass as well.

I still use my inshore reels if it’s not a tight casting space. And depends on what I’m fishing for. If I’m catching decent sized bass I’m just sticking with that. Smaller bass/bream or tighter areas I like a light spinning reel with 6-8 lb test. Small to large beetle spins, spinner baits, and Texas rigged worms or lizards are my go to. Red shad, watermelon seed, pumpkin seed are my go to colors for plastics. But if the pond is holding some good fish with good structure to fish over, nothing beats a Zara spook on top water for me.

Thanks for the responses. Said combo but didn’t mean it in the sense of a combo deal. Will purchase separately. All of our ponds feature overgrown levees with trash trees and lots of beaver activity, so lots of underwater structure too. Target is bass, suspect there are some pushing 5 or 6 pounds.
I’m comfortable with spinning or bait-cast.

If you’re fishing for bass that size I would stick to your saltwater rigs. I use a shimano curado on a 7’ all star rod with 12 lb mono. But if you potentially have to hoss decent sized bass through vegetation or structure might be worth switching to braid. I use a penn battle spinner here and there as well, and like it too.
