If you do a DIY hunt in Colorado with a group of 3-4 hunters and you have camping gear already you can do the whole thing for under $1000 per person easily.

License $565
Gas & Food $200-$300 (pretty healthy budget here)
Miscellaneous $150
Yep. Split the fuel cost and add your food and license. I'd say under $1500 easily.

What can cost is all the shite you need to buy to bring. Handheld GPS, UHF radio, rangefinder, cold weather clothes and boots, cold weather sleeping bag, etc.

Sounds like a fun time despite the lack of kill. We are going up in 3 weeks to Aguilar Co with Trujillo Creek Outfitters to do a 5 day hunt on the second season. 4 of us are going, we all have bull tags, and 2 of the group have mule deer tags. We are all pretty pumped. This will be my first time elk hunting. I can't wait.

Why only 5 dsys? The 2nd rifle season is 9 days long.

Y'all should get a hotel and hunt public land for a couple days if y'all don't all tag out.

We have the option to hunt an additional 3, but it's a Saturday through Wednesday hunt, and the option to hunt til Saturday but we all have to be home by Monday for work.

Sweet trip man, can't beat the experience!

I am leaving in 33 days for Gardiner Montana. Got a muley tag and bull tag.

I was lucky last year to get both of the tags filled. We didn't have any snow and only 2 of us out of 10 got an elk. I was real lucky.

Hoping we get some snow this year!

I would love to do a bow hunt just like you did.

Pics are awesome BTW!!

My NM elk tag is $550. While it sucks to pay that much, it keeps the lottery entries low.

Pricey yes, but I would hope that the money spent on tags goes to the conservation of these animals and the land that we hunt on.

But I could be wrong and someone is pocketing a lot of money

I may be incredibly naïve or gullible, but I believe that parks and wildlife is one of the few areas that government does well and is corruption free most everywhere in the country...

I also think the people that work in this department and the folks who pay for and use the services have more respect for the job/services than most other gov agencies. That probably helps a lot.

The article I read said some of the funds go to EPA regulation type issues. Kind of like a cigarette tax.

not laughing at you but we have serious issues with the salmon runs here yet for years they allow commercial nets in the Columbia river. In fact, we've been paying a tax to help get them off the river. This year they were supposed to be off yet here they are and I paid a 15$ tax on top of my license and tag. Runs are horrible this year but the gill netters have been in multiple times just this fall.

Someone is getting paid.

Nice pics and great stories. Too bad you didn't get a shot on one. The wife and I just got back from an anniversary trip up there on Wednesday. Two guys were checking their bows and gear at the airport in Denver and I asked if they got anything. They said no. Airline checker told me of all the hunters that she had checked only 2 had said they got something and they were antelope hunters that had gone to Wyoming. Not that it matters but the elk were bugling like crazy in the national park. I had a 6x6 standing broadside at 25 yards. One of these days I'll get up there for a hunt.
