Instead of putting mono on first?
I've heard of people using some tape as a one time deal, then never fuss with it again. Anyone here do this? If so, what kind of tape and anything special that you do?

I use electrical tape on all my reels I use braided on. Prevents the spool of line from spinning.

Plus one the Electrial tape.

You use less braid with the mono backing.

If it's strictly for freshwater or small fish does it matter? Only need a hundred yards or so to last me a long time

For that little bit of line no.

Blue painters tape works well.

My spool has a grip in the center of the spool already built in

I apply a little bit of super glue to the first wrap. Haven't had a slipping problem since
