Anyone have experience with older Yamaha Vmaxs?
Posted by GeauxTime9 on 12/5/17 at 5:31 pm00
I may pick up an older boat that has a 2005 Yamaha Vmax HPDI 225. I’m not familiar with these motors. What are some things to be sure to look over before purchasing? Obviously I am sea trialing and testing it under a load. I will also have compression test done to it.

Mine came with a 2007 175. The compression check will give you a printout or any faults in the motor’s history. Mine had one fault and that was water in the gas in 2009.

I had that exact year and model motor on my Champion. Blew a Cylinder and a half 3 years ago and replaced it with a new Yamaha SHO which is far and away a better motor. Really no comparison.

Are they pretty reliable motors?

The OX66 Vmax’s were extremely reliable. The HDPI ad HDPI series 2 were also good motors. I had an 06 HDPI 250 on a skeeter 21 I class and one thing I’d say to do is change your fuel filters every other year. There are 3 of them. 2 are easy and 1 is kinda tricky. There’s a plastic housing that expands with the gas liquid/vapor in and out and causes the housing to swell permanently. When you get the new one, you’ll probably have to file down the beveled side to get it to go back on but an easy fix nonetheless. My .02

Look them up on the hulltruth. A lot of people have had problems with some of them. I had the 150 and it was great. Like others mentioned stay on top of your maintenance if you get it.

Only a matter of time before it blows.

I have that exact motor.
If your looking to purchase it have compression checked and pay a mechanic $100 to hook the computer up to it and see if there are any issues.
Once you purchase it, it is very important to keep up with the maintenance properly or it will blow up.
You need to immediately have the fuel injectors cleaned. Have the fuel filters changed and most importantly have the VST filter changed. The VST filter is what most people don't change and this is where most of your issues come from.
If you take care of those things it's a very reliable motor and is fast as hell
