I’ve eaten gafftop and have not thrown one back since.
Gafftop are good eating. Used to catch a lot of them fishing off the Lake P seawall. I'll keep gafftop as long as I have a hard cooler. I throw them back when I'm in my kayak using a soft cooler because I don't want to risk a catfish barb puncturing the cooler

Same here. I got skunked one day on reds and trout, but kept some gafftops to take home and eat. They tasted great. However, all that slime is an issue for me.

Also everoyone at the dock gave me shite for keeping gafftops haha

Just seems too risky to have them anywhere near. Them bastards are painful.

All catfish species that I've ever caught have the ability to hit you hard with their barbs and all of them are quite painful for a while before it wears off.

I was out last week along the Miss. river and caught some too small to keep blue cats and one of them got me when I was unhooking it to toss back in the river. SOB had my hand hurting for a good 15 minutes before it finally eased up.

Oh, and the old wives tale of rubbing the wound on the side of the catfish is BS. That has never worked for me.

This...it takes a really large hard head to make it worth the trouble cleaning it. But they taste just fine

Dude I've never kept hardheads or gafftops, but if I did, I sure as shite wouldn't show anybody at the dock. Clean that shite in my backyard at home.

I don't even want to bring gafftops near the boat. Gross.
