Amite river trot line help
Posted on 7/2/14 at 4:04 pm

So I've set up a couple trot lines on a bayou off the amite. I've tried 3 different baits so far with not much luck.
Worms: one small flathead
Beef melt: 2 turtles
Soap: nada except my buddies insults
Any suggestions on a bait I'm forgetting?

Why a bayou and not the main river?
Also find a bend in the river and set a line across the river just down from the bend. They form natural washouts which fish will gather in.
Make sure your line is weighted to the bottom properly.
Catching your own shiners would probably be best. If you can't do that then try some cut bait. Cut up frozen pogies should work if you can't catch your own shiners.
Use soap when the water is murky.

I'm in my yak so I try to stay off the main river. The bayou I'm on is good sized though, just not busy.

The water is super murky here, so I thought soap would be good. I'm thinking about stopping by the local mexican grocery and picking up some Zote soap I've heard about.
Also plan on getting me a shiner trap.

I can tell you that Ivory works just fine. Sometimes they aren't biting it but that's all we have ever used and have caught many a boxes of catfish on it.
Not sure what canal you are using. We generally always stayed in the main river. I'm not sure how big of a difference that makes but it probably is a factor with having more current.

Get you some shiner trap jugs similar to these:

Use cornmeal to bait them with. It doesn't take long at all to catch a few hundred shiners with these.
Link didn't work for me, but I'm pretty sure I know what you're talking about. Should I put it in a little creek or just on the side of the river? Cornmeal eh?

I'm on Colyell creek which is where the Bayview is. I don't think it'd be too big of a problem b/c I'm right around the corner from the actual Amite.

My dad runs trout lines in the river right at the the entrance to colyell creek. Literally right past the curve where the house with an enclosed boathouse is. Does really good there. Pretty much only does it in the spring though. Water stage has a lot to do with his catch.
If working them on the week days, I'd put it in the river.

For the traps
We always just set them up off of one of the sandbars in a few feet of water. That way we could just park our boat on the sandbar and line up the traps in a row. You have to watch to make sure no one runs their boat over them.
You need some current for them to catch. Make sure to face the flute so that the shiners swim against the current to enter the trap.

Live bream or worms is all we ever used. Plenty successful.
Livers never did much.
An eel is money though

Red hot dogs. Thank me later.

I tried this last weekend for the first time. Cut the hot dogs into 3 or 4 baits each. I put them in a covered container, poured oil of anise and half a jar of chopped garlic over them. I let them soak several days in the fridge. I was using a rod instead of a trot line, and the fish loved them. I ended up with 4 quart bags of fillets.

Ive caught them doing less work than that lol. I was using cut bait on my lines not catching any and saw a guy slaughtering them and he was using hot dogs

Stupid question here, but where do I get bait shrimp? What is bait shrimp exactly compared to regular shrimp I'd buy at Leblancs or something?
Update on my lines:
Still no luck. I baited today with red hot dogs. I'm going to make a batch of the hot dog/garlic/oil of anise shite that somebody mentioned.
Also got a little shiner trap for $8 off amazon that will hopefully be full by morning.
