90 HP Mecr 2 stroke in line fuel filter?

Just a back story, my motor has run like a champ for years. I was fishing a couple weeks ago and while running it started to choke back then surge forward. I checked the hose and saw where the inner lining was badly deteriorating. When I got home I pulled the inline film canister looking filter and it had pieces of the hose in it. I got a new clear filter but it has a in and out side. The filter runs at a 45 angle so I put the in on the high side and the out on low. Did I do it correct? Tia

If your filter is before the fuel pump, the hose coming from the tank/boat needs to be connected to the inlet side. If your filter is after the fuel pump, the hose coming from the fuel pump needs to be connected to the inlet side.

The way it was explained to me is tank on the inlet side if she's sucking. Pump on the inlet side if she's blowing.

?
"In" is telling you which end comes from the gas tank to the filter and "out" would run from the filter to the engine . The orientation of the filter shouldn't matter at all, though I wouldn't put it in upside down.
Sounds like you need to be changing hoses if you're finding bits of rubber in your filter. Hoses and clips are super cheap and usually the hardest part of running them is getting your arm in the tight compartments. Don't store your engine with ethanol in the lines, it eats the shite out of that soft rubber.

How do I tell if it's before or after the pump? When I squeezed the primer bulb gas came in the "in" side and out the "out". That sound right?
Also the lower side has the screen around it

Do you run ethanol free gas? Ethanol will deteriorate hoses.

Yes, nothing but EF gas. However I believe some people advertise EF that has ethanol in it.
Update
I had filter in backwards (fuel pump was under filter pushing gas up). Got everything switched and ran engine and it had same problem. Got back and checked filter and it is loaded with pieces of the old hose I gues from the fuel pump? Don't know where they're coming from bc I changed hose but there's a ton of them. Guess it's headed to the mechanic....smh
