If you're my age you had walkie-talkies growing up and even a CB or two. May even still have a CB. Most CBs are good for 7-12 miles. VHF radios on our boats 5-7 miles.

Given that, what kind of magic radio voodoo is in these 37-mile walkie-talkies that recently came out?

Example 1

Example 2

We tried some, no one ever turned them on. If you called and they didn't answer, they were on fish!

Im pretty sure those would need a gmrs or frs repeater to talk that far.

This, they are GRMS family radio, which means they are FM radios in the 460 MHz range. Line of sight use. If you are 2000 feet in the air over flat land, then maybe you can talk 30 miles.
