The Deep Water Horizon is using the Marshall island flag of convenience. How will this ultimately play out for B.P./Transocean?
Any admiralty lawyers out there? I'll hang up and listen.

No it won't.

I am pretty sure that the Horizon was an ABS classed vessel. The flagged state really has nothing to do with anything. This article is about an attorney trying to find some angle to approach for his client.

Agreed. American shipyards can't compete on anything larger than OSV's so pretty much all large marine equipment is built foreign. Only vessels built in the USA can fly the American Flag. (Jones Act) Also only American flagged vessels can engage in coastal commerce. Jones act is the only thing keeping our shipyards afloat.

I dont think this is quite accurate. For smaller vessels gulf coast shipyards can be competitive. I can think of a couple boats built in La and flagged in Vanuatu. We just won't compete with Hyundai Heavy Industries.

Don't think for a minute if foreign flagged vessels were allowed to operate in our waterways that owners would continue to pay US yards the construction premium. Not saying their work is better IMO it isn't but the price is much cheaper.

There are many boats built in the US that end up being flagged foreign, because they go over seas and never come back. Most of those vessels are specialty vessels, such as patrol boats, ferries, etc
