my b-i-l is a petroleum engineer for Chevron...a few patents for directional drilling equipment..."expert" on drilling mud...
says he does not have a loy of confidence that the "top kill" will work. still he hopes that he is wrong.

the mud pumps and the weight of the water soluble mud have shown the ability to buck the formation pressure but they apparently dont have the ability to choke off the formation pressure permanently.
bp not knowing how the well is actually flowing and not being able to circulate the mud means it was worth a shot but it does not seem to be the answer

This is really uncharted territory.
on the one hand, there's a certain degree of frustration at the fact that BP (and the industry generallt) appears to not have been at all prepared for this,
at the same time, considering that this is the first such circumstance since 1979, I cannot totally blame them.

this should not be an indictment of the deepwater drilling industry - but it is
this should be an indictment of the bp drilling philosophy - and it definitely is

can't really argue with that

Got a cousin who is a petroleum engineer in Houston. Has worked all over the globe - Dubai, Libya to name a couple. says that BP's reputation has long been of a bunch of folks who cut corners and don't know how to handle their business. The industry at large is not surprised to see BP at the center of this mess.

This is not the first time I heard this about bp.

bp is big on safety culture for the lower and medium tiers of their company. but they are a "whatever it takes to get it done" mind set in their upper management - we see that in design, construction, drilling and completion
I have been on numerous bp deep water platforms and their mentality is to always keep the pressure on their people because working for them is an "honor"
they are relentless on the most inane stuff for the common bp employee/contractor/service personnel

A friend of mine who is a PE thinks the top kill has already failed and they are stringing us along for a few days to save face. Says they won't be able to try cement bc the mud hasn't worked like they thought.
I pray he is wrong but have a feeling nothing but the relief well will solve this. Was really optimistic about the top kill until I heard this.

Yes they are. After this incident, and reading about the "urgency" from Houston to get that rig moved to the next well, I'd have to agree with your

I believed this a month ago when I heard of the plans announced to get control of the well. The relief well(s) is THE solution under the circumstances unfortunately.
