instead of trying to save it would the spill have been negated? I know nothing about drilling, just a question.

They did try to keep it burning. That is why the boats were spraying water on the burning rig. Not to put the fire out but to keep the rig floating and the fire burning. The rig eventually sank and the fire went out. I am sure if they could relight the fire it would pose a risk to the rig drilling the relief well.

Rig doesn't sink, riser stays intact, no leak.
