How would the BP spill be any less tragic had this happened to a nationalized oil company? Wasn't the Itoc 1 spill in 1979 done by PEMEX, the Mexican national oil company?

Why do you assume 'less tragic'?

Ummm I would contend it would be worse.

I don't trust the govt with my social security and Medicare. How would i trust them with my energy?

Exactly my point. So why is there now a hue-and-cry from the left to nationalize American oil companies? How would this been avoided had this well been owned by the government? Stricter oversight by some bureaucrat?

Government run oil companies, overstaffed, overbudget, and mismanaged.

Who would the boycotters boycott if BP was run by the government? What's going to happen when China starts drilling off the coast of Florida? We all know about their stellar record of coal mine safety. I wonder if their oil wells are as safe as their coal mines.
