Britain's two largest warships in the Pacific, battleship HMS Prince of Wales (top) & battlecruiser HMS Repulse (bottom), are being smashed by Japanese torpedo bombers:

Torpedoed HMS Prince of Wales slowly capsizing, lower decks flooding- she can no longer bring her guns low enough to fire at Japanese planes. Crew abandoning ship, trying to climb aboard destroyer HMS Express:

2000+ crew are adrift in the sea; late-arriving British pilot: "Every man waved & put his thumb up to me- like holidayers at Brighton!"
quote:
Royal Air Force pilot is mistaken: the survivors are waving their fists at the planes arriving too late to protect them, some shouting: "RAF! Stands for Rare as fricking Fairies!"

In late 1941 Winston Churchill decided to send a small group of fast capital ships, along with one modern aircraft carrier to Singapore, to deter expected Japanese aggression. In November, Repulse which was in the Indian Ocean was ordered to Colombo, Ceylon to rendezvous with the new battleship Prince of Wales. The carrier Indomitable, which was assigned to join them, was delayed when she ran aground in the Caribbean. Prince of Wales and Repulse and their escorting destroyers comprised Force Z, which arrived in Singapore on 2 December 1941. On the evening of 8 December, Force Z departed for an attempt to destroy Japanese troop convoys and protect the army's seaward flanks from Japanese landings in their rear.[3

Had an uncle that was an Iwo vet, he used to say something like “the Navy boys were good to us, fed us good and were real nice because they knew they were taking a lot of us to die, the flyboys had our respect because they saved our asses whenever we needed an air strike, the army? sometimes we wondered if they were even on our side “
