Third Leg said it best. Always stay creative. You have to take extended periods of low stress. I feel you'll come out better in the end. I have devoted my life to work, and I think it's killing me. I'm looking to get out in a few years.

Same here. But the work I do isn't my identity. I'd rather not work, but have to be able to afford the things I do. I'll retire as soon as possible.
I totally agree with this. I have been in my field (Parole Officer) for 26 years and with some people, it consumes their identity. I've never let it do that to me. I have a full life outside of my work and I live it to the fullest by spending as mush time as possible, at my beach house or on my boat. My wife and I also travel quite a lot as well. We're been trying to cruise the world, one cruise at a time.
I can retire in 16 more months. I think I'll work a little while past that in order to have my beach house paid off. That will take about 48 more months to have it paid in full. After that, I'm done.

I loved his book. It really made me think about my life and career choices.

I'm not surprised. That guy is ten sorts of measured, and worldly.
I think you're right in your creativity assertion. I need to feel like I'm learning, at all times. Very rarely can I remain content. It's a a double edged sword though.

I work to live. I just quit my job to move to a place closer to family. I had a good job, but didn't like feeling lonely when I left. I think that you should enjoy your work as much as you can, but it shouldn't define you if you have some greater passion. When people ask what I do, I tell them that I work as an engineer, but I also enjoy cooking for friends and finding new projects to work on. I think that gives a better summary of me. My work is a big part of my life, but I have other things that I like about myself.

My least favorite part of life is my elevator speech, I fricking loathe talking with people about work.
Defined by work is a nicer way of saying someone is uninteresting, and bound to monotony, except in rare instances.

I'm big on compartmentalization, I rarely discuss hobbies or personal shite at work and NEVER talk about work in social settings. It works for me, but lately the work compartment is getting way too big.
Going back and reading this thread, I actually post serious shite when I'm filled with cheap wine and self-loathing. frick all that noise.

This is something I struggle with every day. I find it the most philosophical/existential question in my life right now
...and it's been on my mind for years.
