This reminds me on the POW held by the Japs in WWII. He had been captured early in the war, Bataan. Went thru quite a few prisoner camps, each worse than the last. Survived by the skin of his teeth. He was on the Japanese mainland in a POW camp when the war ended. The Americans couldn't physically get to the camp right away so they air-dropped some supplies in.
After surviving 4 years as a POW, a can of beans hit him in the head and killed him when the parachute did not deploy correctly.
