Believe it or not, the next full Moon to actually peak on the winter solstice won’t be until 2094!

I'll be in my yard wearing a deerskin, dancing around a fire with the head of one of my enemies on a stick from 4-5pm. Y'all feel free to stop by and have a cup of the complimentary pigs blood I'll have out in a Gatorade dispenser.

Yeah but you'd think the amount of sun would be the primary factor. I know the earth takes time to warm up and cool down, but every day from here on out is longer until June, yet temps get colder for another 6 weeks.

You'd think peak winter would be a little closer to solstice.

Another weird fact: September and October are the hottest months of the year in Southern California.

It's considered the official start of winter, something I'll never understand. You'd think the 45 days before and after the shortest day of the year would be winter, but it's actually colder 6 weeks from today than it is today.

Try this to understand it... I think the northern Gulf of Mexico has surface temps in the low-80s on the first day of Summer (Summer Solstice) in June, and in the mid-80s a couple months later during the "Dog Days of Summer", despite the fact that the days have been getting shorter (and Sun tracking south) for over 50 days.

Those 2-4 degrees make a huge difference, given the volume of water, not to mention atmospherics, land, etc. Thus the Deep South typically has a brutally hot August (and 2nd half of July and 1st half of September). Early-June is warm, and even hot, but typically not "brutal". Although it can be.

So yea, I suppose we could/should have "Astronomical Winter" in the 45 days before and after the Winter Solstice.. and maybe that is a thing. But in practice, and for eons.. the more important issue was the result of the solstices on weather, agriculture, etc.

In astronomy speak, today's "terminator" delineates the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, while the sun's maximum and minimum altitude delineates the Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer, respectively.
