I've heard Loyola is the best law school in the state FWIW.

loyola has a niche: it is supposed to be very valuable if you can't get into LSU or Tulane but want to practice in nola

if you don't plan on practicing in nola and can't get into the top 2, go to southern

Slo if you had it to do over would you go somewhere else?

heeelllllllll no

well i dunno bout the new chancellor...i did like our old one. we had so many keg parties it was funny to think you were in law school. there are some really good teachers and some mediocre ones, but you'll get that anywhere

i don't plan on leaving LA anytime soon, so the shitty code classes aren't a complete waste

but i am going to LSU law pretty cheaply, which is a big part of the equation

tulane has an academic reputation b/c it is private and it recruits a lot of northeastern kids (who funny enough go to tulane because they can't get into "Good" schools in the northeast)

Many NE kids have a skewed perspective of what a good school is. I got to intern with a girl from upstate NY that attended a small private school in Ohio. Her impression was that public universities were beneath her. It's not like the little private school that she went to carries much weight either.

this reputation often doesn't hold the same weight in the hiring world

Isn't that one of the factors taken into account on these rankings? Why would Tulane be raked so much higher if there weren't distinguishable differences.

And it being private is moot. There are many public schools ahead of them.

yeah i do not get this mentality

it KIND OF mirror the southern LA view on high schools, but there is generally more reason to keep your kids out of public school in urban areas in south LA. but some people support their shitty private schools just b/c they're private

a lot of rankings are based on peer ratings. Other southern insitutions don't seem to care for LSU

The tried and true excuse of "the media hates LSU".

reputation

tulane is private and has the reputation for being a common law school. they hire big names in the common law which get them a good reputationn. they did have the #1 sports law program (but the architect has recently left the school)

having a job is. not where you have your job

i'm going to get counted as having a job for LSU's rankings, and my job will be private practice. however, not all jobs are equal. also some people from tulane do return home where salaries are higher than LA, which skews that stat

tulane isn't a bad school by any means, but unless you're from the area where you want to move to and you have connects there, i've heard it is not exactly easy to get one of those top jobs like people expect based on rankings.

yeah if you do REALLY well at almost any law school you'll be able to get a good job at some big firm in the region/state (assuming you aren't a horrible interview and all that). southern grads can get big firm jobs if they demonstrate they're top notch

This was a bit of culture shock for me moving down to BR from Shreveport. In Shreveport there is ONE Catholic school and until a few years ago when Calvary restarted 9-12 only Evangel existed for non-Catholics and the only private school in SW Shreveport. I knew some smart kids at ECA but the rep still wasn't the best. They would just kick everyone's asses in football.

But one of the jokes around town for years was that the high school I went to was the best private school paid for by public funds. I guess among some students, the attitude and family incomes/community prominence would rival many private schools.

Yeah I think it would have to be Caddo Magnet.
The thing about LCP is we didn't have the weirdo stigma that Magnet did...worth the $ to me
