If you have an ongoing relationship with a dealer it can pay off in the long run. I am a good long time customer and the owner knows me. When I go to buy a vehicle I will be dealing with him personally and not some slapdick salesman.

Shade tree mechanics have none of this. They might have an out of date service manual that's kinda close. He may have been trained at one time back when (and if) he worked for a dealership. But now that training is so out of date it's irrelevant on newer models. He might sorta know things like torque specs on a model that is close, but not exact. And when those specs are updated he won't know about it any more than you will. He has aftermarket "will-fit" parts of suspect origin and who knows what sort of warranty.

When it comes to dealing with matters like this, remember these words, "you get what you pay for".

I used to think like you, until I bought my current truck. 2011 Silverado it's never been touch by anyone except at Ross Downing in Hammond. Good service better prices than you would ever expect from Dealership. Maybe this is the exception and not the rule but I have been treated great and haven't been raped on the price so far. Let's face it that's best you can hope for when dealing any auto stuff.
