Because the mortgage company would have to pay over 2% in interchangea merchant fees.

That's crazy! I think that most people, me included won't ever pay a house off, not an ot baller. But use equity as a form of savings like I do, or as leverage for what they perceive is a better life. My neighbor forclosed assessed at 224k, owed 244k, borrowed to the hilt when it was high, 07, 08 ect happens and there you go. I have great credit and am not rich, locked in at 4 3/8% and consider my house as a part of my wealth. This is a great thread!

You plan to have a mortgage when you're retired?

Yes and no, I can't speak for everyone here, but I'm a chef and about to take a corporate gig for a bunch of money, get out of restaurants, m-f, great benefits ect that would allow me to pay down my mortgage. I may pay it off and just sit (I owe 100k) or move up. I feel finances are a race against mortality. If the risk is worth the reward then sure I might sell and move into something bigger and better
Eta: complex question, and everyone's financial situation is different. I think if I really buckled down I could pay it off an 4-6 years, I would be 45. I want to retire at 55. So lots of possibilities and things to consider

Do not know you, but people in your profession are traditionally terrible at money and business

Yes I do, and trust me I've seen it all over 20 years, I'm not one of them. Just trying my best to get ahead
