While I have very little fear of snakes, that being only of poisonous ones I find your "reasoning" very ignorant. If you get close enough to "stomp" on one you are well within their striking distance. I catch them but never get that close until I have the head pined and controlled. Remember this, ALL snakes have bacteria in their little mouths. Should one of them break your skin you will have one hellova wound too heal.

I've been bitten at least 100 times and have never been infected. But, I think it's the larger snakes that this holds true, with bacteria (rotten flesh stuck between their teeth) being an issue.

I agree. I've been bitten a number of time by rat snakes - there was never "one hellova wound to heal."

There's a large, emerald green snake (non poisonous) on my property that hangs out in the gardens in middle of day. Really cool looking snake. Passes thru my front yard going to gardens like he owns the place. Poisonous snakes get whacked.

Snakes aren't poisonous, they are venomous. You can ingest venom, not poison.

I made my statement based on experience with seeing people bitten and by more than one kind of snake. Since I'm giving advice I'll have to stand by my statement. I advise the OP to not get close enough to "stomp" on a snake. Of course the size of the snake does figure into the equation but to include all snakes into a "stomp" on it statement was a little too wide open. Grass snakes and Anacondas may be a entirely different thread.

Obviously, fear of venomous snakes is realisticn some level. But the reality is that most people fear snakes regardless of the legitimacy of the threat posed, and most people won't put forty the minimal effort required to learn to differentiate between the dangerous and the harmless.

Likewise. Rarely did we catch a snake and not get bit by it. Priority one was always catching the snake. If you take the time to grab them by the head, they are usually getting away. Most of the snakes we caught were water snakes - in a sewage canal, no less. If we were at the house, mom would make us pour hydrogen peroxide on the bite. But most just got washed off with canal water. And not once did I get infected. Snake bites are a non-issue. Worst was from a 6'6" rat snake.

Umm....that guy was coiled ready to strike. Rattlesnake bites are nothing to play around with here, especially when you are miles out on a trail hiking. He looked pissed off. I didn't take that pic btw. That was my cousin in front of me who had to stop to take the pic while I'm freaking out waiting to get past that guy without my dogs seeing him.

Scott should have shot it

Regarding infections, my friend lost his daughter to infection after a bad bite from a wild reticulated python. Or so I understand.

I don't fear snakes but maybe I should. I was joined by a pretty green snake in an African outhouse. Took a few pics. Google images taught it was green mamba. Yikes!

I'll be sure and pass that tidbit along to the 99% of people who call them poisonous around here.

Is it because some are venomous?

Yes.

they're a lot more venomous creatures out there too..like scorpions, spiders

I'm scared of those too. Also because they're venomous.

People, including myself, are not educated enough about snakes to make a determination of which ones will kill you, so I naturally assume they're all evil killers and should be sprayed with gasoline and fire if conveniently available.

I have no problem with snakes. Grew up with them here and there as pets and my wife actually had some boa's for pets as well when she was younger.

Im not down with poisonous snakes though. My old roommate actually used to breed the frickers to make anti-venom. frick that.

As far as people being afraid of them, its due to lack of education about them. Most people just dont want to take the risk of there possibly being a venomous snake in the area. Where I grew up, we had snakes all over due to a big lake in the back of the subdivision and Kleinpeters cow pasture behind our houses.

Now a spider.... frick a spider. Every damn spider needs to be exterminated. Same for wasps, but thats bc Im EXTREMELY allergic to them.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want yo get bitten by a venomous snake but I'm not frightened by them.
What I am creeped out by are large spiders. If they're outside and not Brown/black widows or brown recluses they get to live.
Spiders inside the house die immediately.

It's the shock value for me. I'm not scared of the snake per say but the moment he makes me shite my pants.
