This is interesting...
I've been running my Firman 7500, that's back-fed, non stop. Only stopping to re-fuel and change the oil, never had a single issue with overheating.

how many people actually would know to shut off their natural gas immediately and even have a fire extinguisher on hand...

Liquid cooled or don’t bother. It won’t last. This is Louisiana not Kansas.
Words of wisdom here
Air cooled will work well for up to 12 years if you go kohler and/or Cummins but if you go liquid cooled, you’ll have it for 25 plus years and during an outage, you’ll have less problems

Just pull your meter so you don't back feed and hard wire in at the meter base.

Is that gonna run the whole house though?

According to this article, you'll need at least a 5,000 watt to run a/c and washer/dryer. If they can all run simultaneously, I'm not sure. You'll also need a tri-fuel generator if you're running natural gas. They claim installation is anywhere between $500-$1,500.

That's how we usually do it but you might run into problems with the power company not wanting to put your meter back in. The guys we had working our area after Laura were really appreciative that we isolated them from a back feed. They made it a point to come around and let us know it was time to disconnect the gen wires on the bottom connections and put our meter back in before we went hot.
