Do you have gas or electric?
"If you have an electric air handler and a leak in the coil depending on the age of the equipment they may not be able to locate a coil for that air handler or if they do the coil might be the same price as the air handler. 99% of the time companies replace the air handler"
Also, if you have a gas unit - replacing just the evaporator is an option but most manufacturers and companies offer a better warranty if you replace the heater as well. You can also be sure that everything matches and fits together like a puzzle - many companies use a box evaporator coil that fits up against the heater perfectly. If your heater is very old and in poor condition it is likely they recommended replacing it as well.
Lastly - the phase out of R-22. EPA is phasing this refrigerant out."
