Maybe not scientific, but economic and to press humanity further than its ever been, certainly. And the fact of the matter is the Moon base is there for mining and also to launch to other planets. It is the optimal location. Before we step foot on Mars, I truly believe that a Moon Base is absolutely necessary to achieve this.

Maybe if we stop sending robots up and starting people to do exploring shite people would care more. Nobody gives a shite about probes. People want to see Niel Armstrongs and John Glenns

Exactly. Even I as a space nerd go blank on some of the probe names. Everyone would be interested in the people living on the Moon Base. Hell, you could turn it into a reality show station and call it "The Moon Channel". You could have contests to live up there for a month. There's no reason we shouldn't have a moon base now.

How would they be able to build a base on the moon? You can't exactly drop off bulldozers. Would they drop off a portable base already made?
