They offered the seller’s asking price of $650,000, and “she just took it,” Mr. Hicks recalled. In retrospect, he said, “That should have told us something.”
what is this shite?
If i am selling a house and you offer me my asking price, yes, i am going to "just take it".
did they expect her to counter with a higher price than what she was asking?

This is why a home inspection is important
A typical home inspection would not catch half of this shite. They are mostly useless.

They set their budget at $800,000. In a year and a half, they toured 146 houses, “and then we stopped counting,” Ms. Hicks said. They made offers, but found themselves continually outbid.
Sounds like they really wanted more house than they could afford so they jumped on this when they saw it. I'm sure they had misgivings but for the area it was within their budget (or so it seemed at the time).

You don't have to be a contractor to spot that shite. Plus, why not make a sun room under that deck ya closed in on the left side?

Sounds like they got screwed by either the inspector or the contractor that scared them to death.
