They can understand some sentence structure and concepts like the difference between Proper nouns and nouns.
If they can differentiate between plurals and possessives, they've got the rest of the "literate" world beat!

Maybe you guys can suggestion a breed. We have 3 younger children - 2 girls & a boy. The girls are fine around dogs but the boy likes to rough house with them like he's the alpha. It's rare but he has been bit. He just fusses at the dog but once he bit my in laws dog back. Funniest shite I've seen.
I'm thinking sturdy, laid back but with a bit of playfulness. It's been along time since I've had a dog just looking for a direction
Need more information. How much time do you have to train/exercise the dog? Take this quiz:
Animal Planet Breed Selector
Offhand, I'd say something like a Lab, a Golden, a Boxer, or a Chessy.

I don't get it. You brought up proper nouns vs. common nouns. If I further the discussion I'm a grammar Nazi?

My boxer is the smartest dog I've ever owned, but I dont know if thats breed specific
We've owned four boxers and I would placed their intelligence alongside almost any breed. A large component in measuring canine intelligence is their ability to recognize and obey orders at the first, second, third, etc command. My young Boxers were impatient, tempermental, and willful, but I'd be damned if they didn't mimick human behavior as well as any animal I'd been around (up to and including attempting to turn doorknobs and attempting to unlatch our gates). They were also extremely intuitive.

I'm a big fan of German Shepherds.
The loyalty of these dogs is amazing. My mom used to tell me that at any moment she expected my GS to open her mouth and speak perfectly good English, very smart dogs.
quote:
The German shepherd dog has an outline of smooth curves on a body that is longer than it is tall. It is strong, agile and substantial. Its gait is exceptionally outreaching and elastic, covering the ground in great strides. It has a double coat, with the outer coat consisting of dense, straight or slightly wavy, harsh, close lying hair of medium length.
Among the most intelligent of breeds, the German shepherd dog is so intent on its mission — whatever that may be — that it is virtually unsurpassed in working versatility. It is utterly devoted and faithful. Aloof and suspicious toward strangers, it is protective of its home and family. It can be domineering. It can be aggressive toward other dogs, but it is usually good with other pets.
