Digging a grave with a shovel is tough.
The corners must be square all the way down.
If the casket gets stuck halfway down, it is a bitch to pull it out in order to square the corners up.
Also, past a certain depth, grave digging becomes a one man job because 2 people make it too crowded.
48 inches of earth on top of the casket/vault is plenty.
