Living icon Al Copeland is not.
The business he started is eaten at by tens of thousands in the N.O. area daily. Many people nationwide consider it to be Cajun food. (They have never eaten Cajun food, or been to LA)
Everyone there knows who he is and many have worked for him. Ask them who Al Copeland is and they will all have an answer. Then ask them who Ted Kaczynski is.
So, while not an icon, he has had a lot of impact on the city.

They should be more progressive and honor a living icon who shaped much of the local flavor.
