How in the frick did this make 12 pages???
This is an OT math problem thread where half the dillweeds here got it wrong and have called people idiots. 12 pages is par for the course.

With that said, why are we dividing before multiplying if we are using PEMDAS?
Instead of dividing by 2, change that to multiplying by 1/2... then you can do the problem in any order you see fit and still get 58.

People are stupid. The answer is 58. Even Google agrees.

Explain it to me then...
I mean, it's been pointed out probably at least 5 times.
Multiplication and Division are on the same level, you do which ever comes first left to right.
PEMDAS could just as well be called PEDMSA

It's been explained at length over the past 10 pages.
And we still have people answering 10.

Mostly because the majority of this board think a division symbol is used in everyday mathematics.
It makes sense - it was last seen to them at their highest grade level... somewhere between 5th and 7th grade.

Because multiplication and division are equal. Division is just multiplication by the reciprocal.
Think of it as:
6^2 * 1/2 * (3) + 4
Think of it as:
6^2 * 1/2 * (3) + 4

You're seriously gonna insult peoples intelligence in a thread where you're asking why people are dividing before multiplying? Is this real life?

Don't hide behind the division symbol as the reason you got 10.

Generally speaking most well written problems are commutative.
Left to right or right to left yields the same answer. a+b=b+a; a*b=b*a ; a/b=(1/b)*a

The original 288 thread is 56 pages.

Do you feel like this is real?

Then what's the confusion? The answer is 58 given the exact way the problem is written.

Thats one way it could be construed. Like I said the problem is written terribly. Theres a reason you dont see the obelus past middle school, it's vague and ambiguous.

What's a well written problem? Hell, why write 6^2 in the first place? Just put 36 to avoid any confusion.
