I ride a 32 year old Schwinn mountain bike, no suspension, or other fancy stuff. I bought it new in 1988. The cables, pedals, tires, brake pads, seat, grips have all been replaced several times. Only change from original are street tread tires. I ride 10-20 miles a day about 5 days a week.

get a helmet, a pump, and a couple of spare tubes. that is really all you need to start. you can buy more accessories on an as-needed basis.
