For those of you who have no credit card debt and aren't using credit cards: time to take the training wheels off and start making your money work for you. At least use your credit cards and then immediately payoff the balance. Might as well get free money from your expenses.
Oh I use my credit cards a lot. They are paid in full at the end of the month, zero balance. I don't consider this "average household debt".

Don't care because I only use a debit card. Credit cards = loser.

Wrong answer. My reward is being totally debt free.

keep mine at zero, the girlfriend normally carries a couple thousand. nothing like that though.
You are in worse financial danger than anyone else commenting so far. Your GF is a spender and you are a saver.
She spends beyond her means, creating a need to get married and access your savings to cover her spending. Once she has two incomes to spend, the amount and quality of crap she is compelled to buy will escalate.
Run like a scalded monkey and find a saver GF.
Good luck.

We put everything on the credit card and pay it off every month. In fact, my account is set to automatically pay the card down to zero at the end of the month even if I forget. Doing this allows us to rack up an incredible amount of points; we've probably had around $10,000 worth of plane tickets and hotels purchased on our points over the last five years.
It's free money and no debt.
