My nephew who was in 6th grade at the time said, "What's a landline."

54 yo here and can remember if you called someone local, you only needed to dial the last four numbers of the phone number to reach them.
There were party lines also. You couldn't use the phone until another person from another household finished. You could listen to their conversation, but it was easy to recognize the change in tone during the call and knew someone else picked up. Then you'd tell them " hang it up"!!! Lol
