it’s a hard job, I was a helper years ago, lot of climbing, etc. a lot of them in shipyards. pay was good. If you could avoid layoffs it’s a good living.

Now if you can on with Smith Tanks or someone you are set

He’s 19, not 38 with a family. Busting your arse with hard work and long hours is by no means abnormal for someone under 25 starting a career. Military, law school, med school, Wall Street, etc. all do the same. Well maybe not the hard labor part.

ETA: listen to what all these tradesman say but if I’ve said it once I’ve said it 100 times, don’t go into a trade to be a tradesmen. Go into a trade to be a future supervisor or business owner. Look at what the supervisors do 20 years down the road to consider the career.
