Lawn aerator. Rent one and be prepared for a workout

Not necessary to aerate. Boom. I just saved you money and countless hours. You're welcome

???

My back yard of St Augustine gets a shite pot of direct sun (westward facing) and it's really beaten down and thin. Hoping that the process would thicken it up.

Let a soccer team play a few games in your yard.

I don't think this is a thing - aerate the yard. It's just a way to sell shite and let your neighbors laugh at you.

AAA rental has a walk behind aerator that I use every so often. Does a really good job and is not that hard to use.

Not the case my friend. When done properly it works well at getting water down in the earth to feed the grass.

To the op. Don't just punch a bunch of holes in the yard and call it a day. Do it properly by spreading sand on the lawn. Get the sand down in the plug holes. It wil make a huge difference.

Worms.

Seriously, go buy several buckets of night crawlers and put them in the ground. Earthworms are pretty much responsible for making soil ready for agriculture
