That's very unusual. Normally basset hounds normally have an incredible sense of smell, second only to bloodhounds. One of the kids would put a piece of meat and hold it under its nose while one of them would hold it back. She would then hide it outside and then the other would turn the dog loose and it would haul butt through the door. Once outside that dogs nose went immediately to the ground and its tail would arch over its back and it would start tracking. It would only take minutes for the dog to find it.

Mine would be the "Cajun Squirrel Dog" bread by Mr. Carlton Savoy in St.Amant,La.
It's a mix between a Tennessee Mountain Feist and Black Mouth Cur. Super intelligent and the best nose I've ever seen.
