Thanks for the compliment, but I am a mother. And my kids stand to inherit a large book of business. They must attain college degrees and all of the networking that goes along with a strong alumni base. If they can do that, they will be set.
Do what I did and file a noncustodial waiver at an elite college. I miss my dad after practically disowning him, but I didn’t have to pay for much outside of living expenses.

Guarantee they'll have to buy the new editions for school. Your's must be at least 20 years out of date.

Edit: my son attends a well respected private prep school in Houston. He has all A's and 1 B. Sports, leadership, volunteer work, etc.. he has been told by his counselor that LSU is a "stretch" school for him. (He hasn't taken ACT yet). My daughter also attends an all girls prep school, she has friends who are starting 501C3's just so it can go on their resumes. Girls are scrambling to get into charity social groups at 11 years old, just for a shot at a Texas school that isn't Tech or Texas State. These are all kids with parents that have plenty of money to pay full price. Do not underestimate LSU in this scenario.
Are your kids interested in engineering at all? If they are, have them check out the "Academy" admissions to ATM. This started at Blinn JC a long time ago, but now has gotten very sophisticated and they run it through Community Colleges throughout the state. The core curriculum profs are ATM profs, electives and humanities through the CC. Cost is a LOT lower for that first year, or in some cases, two.
The one for Austin is sponsored by Chevron and is of course called the Chevron Academy. From what you say, I don't think you will have as much of an issue getting in to UT or ATM as you think. Both of mine got into both schools, but the son decided to save $$ and go the Chevron Academy route. He heads to the main campus this Fall.

LSU doesn’t give jack shite to OOS students. I just dropped $200k for my son’s degree didn’t get a single penny. 4.0 GPA student
That's the point... why accept a higher % of instate kids when OOS kids will pay higher tuition. Schools are giving away free money if they prioritize in-state too much.

Not giving a lot of scholarship money has nothing to do with difficulty of just getting accepted.
And nowhere did I say it did.
