If the F4 in Arkansas had hit a city with 100k people, you wouldn't get this thread. FACT.
This thread is because of the fear mongering around New Orleans metro which was not warranted and its inclusion in a risk zone of 4/5 with no context causing decision makers to freak out and cancel shite. Data driven map comes out of Oklahoma and no one uses common sense regarding potential outcomes other than red map bad let’s cancel everything.

Can't comment on the "fear mongering" but it's odd that people are so stuck on the "risk area" being a miss or whatever when you literally had an EF-4 just 90 miles north of New Orleans.

I honestly think they look at these events and equate it with the hurricane cones. They see them and think that is supposed to be this widespread destruction like a hurricane when it’s nowhere near the same.
I say this because I had to explain to multiple people here in Hattiesburg that the percentages displayed on tv for tornadoes in the area didn’t actually mean there was a 25%-35% chance that a large long track tornado was going to hit them. It means there is a 25%-35% chance that there will be 1 within ~25 miles of you. And we had 3….
Absolutely blew their minds.

I tend to agree that it all feels over-hyped, but I also understand why. For the average poster on this board and other like-minded people, we all generally follow local events, news, weather forecasts etc. However, there’s another segment of the population that doesn’t do this. The forecasters, news outlets, etc are doing what they can to reach this other segment - and it becomes “over exaggerated” for us that are aware of our surroundings.
Now we have to be able to understand the risks and plan accordingly all while hopefully saving life/property of others.
