Water Softener System Recommendations

Building a house, and planning on installing a whole house softener system with an R.O. system in the kitchen. The last time I bought a system was over 15 years ago, and I'm sure things have changed a bit since then. Can the water savvy OT'ers out there give me some recommendations on what brands/systems to look at? This is for a house in East Tennessee with very hard water (especially high calcium content).
